Tradition of gods, the varmala ceremony is a crucial ritual followed religiously in the Hindu wedding ceremony. It connects the couple spiritually and tends to bound them for eternity.  Generally, flowers like roses, jasmine, orchids and marigolds are used to make the traditional garlands but now it is time to add a bit of twist to this amazing ceremony.  Indian wedding decors stores are now being done with the modern approach and so are the garlands.

There are a zillion ideas to choose from when it comes to garlands. From the all green trend to the dramatic rose garlands, we have admired it all. But in this article, I have listed some of the most exclusive ideas that are surely going to make you a trendsetter.

Lavender

Lavender has been used for its medicinal purposes for ages now but we tend to somehow forget that they absolutely look gorgeous as well.  Their subtle aroma is sure to impress and calm you at the same time. Use delicate lavender springs with white roses and grass to make these fantastic garlands. The faded purple color will really compliment any outfit and enhance it as well. Other ways of wearing lavender would be in a tubular fashion made with closely knitted lavender buds paired with beads or pearls.

Tubular mogra garlands

This mogra trend has really taken the wedding world by storm. From backdrops to wedding jewellery and garlands, delicate mogra flowers are being used everywhere. This white contemporary garland can be paired with colorful flowers in order to provide contrast. They look classy, elegant and are very lightweight and can go with any pastel color outfits or minimal ensemble.  Mogra flowers are also used to make a net like structure called ‘jhaal’ which is used to wrap around traditional rose garlands. They look lovely and the refreshing scent of mogra flowers will keep you calm.  As garlands made entirely of mogra buds are very light and petite, these can also be worn in multiple numbers.

Wildflower garlands

There are at least a million varieties of flowers that you haven’t heard of or used before. Traditional garlands that usually include roses, peonies and jasmine now sound very cliché, when you can create amazing garlands with flowers like honeysuckle, sunflower, billy buttons, primrose, anemone, poppies and succulents. Layer these flowers with grass, herbs and ferns in order to add texture and depth. Such varieties work wonders even if they are used in their dry form as they are amazing and they are more durable as compared to the fresh ones.

When it comes to the design of garlands there isn’t much choice as they are traditionally made in the same linear fashion. But nowadays, intricately woven floral knotted garlands are trending more than the basic ones.  These designs are usually made with mogra, jipso filia (baby’s breath) flowers as they are easy to bend and twist. The final product really looks like a piece of jewelry so they are perfect for a simple outfit. Add some roses in the middle of the knots to provide some color and vibrancy.

 

Olive branches

Now this may seem a little too unique but believe me when I say, they will add romance and simplicity to your outfit. Green garlands are very popular in South Indian weddings as they pair up with white and golden kanjeevaram saris perfectly. But olive branches with their unique texture take this trend to a whole new level! These are so simple to make that you can make these on your own and this will add a personal touch or sentiment to the wedding as well. All you need to do is select olive branches and wrap them to a desired length of twine with a wire. Lastly combine the two ends of the twine and your garland is ready. Olive branches can be paired with vendela ivory roses, cranberry peonies and dahlias.

 

 

Jaimala strings

This trend is fairly new but is catching on with the speed of. Here,   you have the opportunity to wear different combinations of varmala together. When different floral strings are put together for one garland, they look like something a queen would wear for her big day and you are no less than a queen!  So get these fancy garlands made as soon as possible so that you can make a statement on your big day.
